My work is described as “etching into layers of paint”.

Regarding the entire surface of the work as “time”, each layer of paint added represents the passage of time.

Etching into the paint is therefore analogous to going back in time and reflecting on life. As you continue to etch further, the white base appears.

The white pigment that serves as the base is made by grinding up shells, which are the corpses of previously living things.

The paint shavings etched away are regarded as ashes, and ashes rise up to heaven, falling back down to earth as new life. Taken as a whole, my works represent reincarnation.

An animal protein-based adhesive is used, representing the flesh and blood of animals.

I drew this piece without using my favorite ballpoint pens, as I’ve recently been giving a lot of thought to the plastic pollution problems our oceans face.

No matter how much consideration I give to living things while drawing, I feel there is a contradiction in the fact that the materials I use to make my art create trash as a result. Trying to think of art materials that have as little an ecological impact as possible, I’ve recently been focusing on Nihonga (Japanese-style paintings), which are created primarily using natural materials.
